How Phoenix Got Its Name

In the mid-1800s, a settlement formed just east of present-day Phoenix. After changing from Swilling's Mill to Helling Mill to Mill City, inhabitants decided to give the city a permanent name. Several monikers were suggested, but a man by the name of Darrell Duppa suggested it be named Phoenix, stating that a new town would spring from the ashes of a former civilization. Phoenix was officially recognized May of 1868 and a Post Office was established June of that same year.
